The Playing Fields

The Friends of Quaggy Playing Fields are a group of local people intent on preserving the green spaces in this part of south east London.

We aim to:

  • support pitches and clubs by helping them to access groups, clubs, and other organisations that need open spaces.

  • bring back into use sports pitches that have been deliberately allowed to become derelict.

  • actively support all areas to become more environmentally aware with habitat enhancement and adopting better eco-practices

  • engage local communities and organisations to reinforce this as a space for all including green commuting routes.

  • oppose all planning applications not related to sport or nature.

  • Develop this as an area of regional sporting significance

Where are we?

map where are we.jpg

In south east London, nestled between two areas of major new housing developments at Kidbrooke and Lee, lies an oasis of green space.

Most of this space is designated as Metropolitan Open Land, Green Chain, and for use for sports, but this does not protect it from developers which use 'special circumstances' for applications to build.

Most of these spaces are privately owned with some actively used as sports pitches, and others fenced off, pavilions allowed to burn down, and owners ignoring calls from sports clubs desperate to access this space. These owners use these pitches as 'land banks' with the idea of making huge sums of money out of land that was put in trust for public use.
